On wintery Wednesday nights from 22 June the NGV comes alive for art after dark: Vienna Lounge, themed this year by renowned performer and artistic director Robyn Archer. The Great Hall and surrounds will be transformed to evoke fin de siècle Vienna and the courage of the Vienna Secession artists. Led by Gustav Klimt, this group rejected the popular styles of art and architecture at the turn of the century, with the idea that ‘to the age its art, to art its freedom’. In 2011, 100 years later, art after dark will showcase Australian performers who represent the spirit and rich zeitgeist of that time. Musicians heralding from Australian art schools will fuse contemporary music with highly stylised themes and visuals. They have been invited to produce an evening inspired by Vienna: Art & Design. We invite you to 2011 art after dark: Vienna Lounge, where past and present meet. art after dark is presented in conjunction with the Austrian National Tourist Office and the Vienna Tourist Board. With their support, art after dark brings you ‘Vienna now’ to complement Vienna’s rich history as presented in the exhibition. Rapskallion & Vignette Cabaret at Art After Dark with special guest Giselle Sibyl [Tribal D'Orient Danseuse] Riotously and rustically romantic, Rapskallion return to the NGV to revel in Viennese splendour with their vaudevillian Polka blues. Along with a stable of performers, including their long-term guest dancer, Giselle Sibyl, they will bring to life the spirit of the bohemian-Viennese cafe with their outrageously costumed theatrics. Giselle will also be performing a Klimt-inspired Tribal Fusion Bellydance Solo in the Cabaret Vignettes between sets and on the Final Evening will present a group Klimpt inspired Butoh Tableau!
