If you have already paid for the 3 workshops, you can add the 2 additional workshops for $50 if paid in advance. You can also pay for $30 for the individual workshops and you can pay at the time. original invite: Workshops of Guedra and Arabic folkloric singing and drumming for an upcoming performance with Rosa Rojas and Alfred Madain. Come and sign up for Workshops in which you will learn two pieces of Guedra dancing and chanting from the Sahara of Southern Morocco and Nubian, Persian Gulf and North African folkloric songs. Each workshop is 3 hours long and will feature a session with Rosa Rojas. Rosa Rojas Rosa Rojas began her journey into traditional sacred dances and songs in 1995. She had the privilege of studying with Katarina Burda, founder and director of the Middle Eastern dance company Aywah! This included intensive training in the traditional folk dances of Turkey, Macedonia, Egypt, and Morocco. Rosa was a solo singer in Aywah! and member of Ms. Burda’s saz performance trio. She has been featured in several Afghan music videos such as the famed Ehsan Aman, which was featured in the movie “The Kite Runner”, and toured and performed with numerous Persian singers such as Moin, Gloria Rohani and Afghan singer Habib Qadari. Through her work, Rosa has developed an enthusiastic following in the Persian and Afghan communities. Rosa was an artistic director and teacher for the Ballet Afsaneh Dance Academy in San Jose, CA for four years, from ‘04-’08, collaborating with the Alborz Farsi School and the award-winning Nejad World Music Center. The workshops also feature a session with Alfred Madain in which you will learn to sing Arabic songs and play along on the frame drums. Your work will be featured in an upcoming concert at the Levantine Center on August 1st as the opening performance and also by performing a song with the headlining band, Bedouin X. Alfred Madain is a native of Jordan who has gained vast amounts of respect for his knowledge in the field of ethnomusicology. Besides being a founding member of the Kan Zaman ensemble and Upper Egyptian Music and Dance Ensemble with Aisha Ali, Alfred has performed with many prominent world musicians, lectured widely on the subject of World Music (including a running internet radio show), worked as a musical director in theater and as a music advisor in film. Three years ago Alfred formed a new group which would focus on the African music of the Arab world and music which had lyrical content that had a more significant social meaning and thus the group Bedouin X was born. The Workshops will take place on Saturdays in Altadena, Ca. The rate is $30 per workshop if purchased at the door or $80 for all three workshops if purchased in Advance.
